Earlier this year I blogged about the Kelly Moore 2 Sues Bag, which is my all-time favorite camera bag. However, when I purchased my new 85mm 1.2L at the start of this wedding season, I found that the three compartments just weren’t enough for wedding days. On a wedding day, I carry any lenses that I’m not using at that specific moment in my suitcase, but during portraits I am always alternating between four to five lenses. This year I have been shooting portraits with my 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 70-200mm, but I often like to have my 24-70mm on me as well, just in case my 35mm isn’t wide enough for bridal party and family photos. With one lens on the camera and four additional lenses to carry, I needed a bigger bag. Enter the Kelly Boy! Yes, it’s supposed to be for men but it’s perfect for me, too! I purchased my new Kelly Moore bag this past May and after shooting seventeen weddings with it, I’m ready to give it a thumbs up! Meet the Kelly Boy:
What you’ll notice right away is that it’s a good-looking bag that doesn’t look like a camera bag, which is always a plus. You’ll also see that it stands up on its own. This feature is a must-have in my book because I’m constantly putting my bag down and I can’t have my bag tipping over! The front flap has two hidden magnetic closures. Here’s what the bag looks like when you open the flap:
The Kelly Boy has two zipper pockets, each with its own envelope pocket on the front. I use one zipper pocket for extra batteries and memory cards, and I use the other zipper pocket for personal items such as my wallet and gum. I usually use the two envelope pockets for lens cloths, lens caps, and my Expo Disc. There is a large zipper pocket also, and I use that one for personal items such as lip gloss, powder, etc. Below you can see the side and back pockets. The side pocket is perfect for a phone and to keep a pen handy, and the back pocket is great for keeping a printout of the day’s timeline and family portraits list handy. At the end of the night, I can unzip the lower part of the back pocket to slip the bag over the handle of my rolling suitcase.
Now for the inside! I actually shoot with the bag with the flap open so that I can easily reach into the bag for a new lens. Inside, the bag has three removable and adjustable velcro dividers that create four sections. When I’m shooting portraits, I use all of these sections for lenses, but once I’m done with portraits, I can transfer one of these lenses to my suitcase and use the fourth compartment for my camera. The dividers can also be adjusted to fit a camera with the lens on as well.
There is a removable laptop divider that allows me to carry my 15″ MacBook, too!
And there you have it! I hope this post is useful to you. If you’re looking for a new camera bag with lots of room, consider the Kelly Boy. It comes in caramel and brown, too, which are just as gorgeous and sleek as the black one. If you have any questions please leave a comment below or email me at info@idaliaphotography.com.
