For a long time, I was only able to offer outdoor maternity sessions for my mamas-to-be but now that I have a studio, I’m happy to share that I’m now officially offering studio maternity sessions, too! Pregnancy is such a precious time in a woman’s life and I’m excited to be able to offer this option for mamas. A studio maternity session is perfect for mothers-to-be who love fine art photography and want to create gorgeous images to pass down to their son or daughter some day. Or perhaps they want their images to be taken in a private setting. Either way, a maternity session is a beautiful way to remember this time in your life. Of course, choosing to have maternity photos taken involves some planning, so today I thought I’d give you a little help with this.
Tips for What to Wear for Your Maternity Session
- Choose clothing that you’ll be comfortable in but that will make you feel beautiful, too. Don’t be afraid to show off your curves!
- Pick something that shows clear separation between boob and belly. It is great to have that visual break to highlight your bump.
- Choose appropriate underwear and bras. Try your dress on with neutral, white, and color undergarments to determine which will look best.
- When thinking about texture, lace is always a lovely idea for maternity photos.
- A color that does not work at all well for maternity is black because it is so slimming and makes the bump less noticeable, especially from the front.
- Avoid bright yellows, reds and oranges. If you choose these colors make sure they are not too vibrant.
Where to Shop for Maternity Dresses
The types of gowns that are best for maternity sessions aren’t readily available at your local mall, so here are some recommended online vendors for those gorgeous flowy dresses we love to see in maternity photos:
How to pick outfits for your family
While the focus will be on mama, I always encourage mothers to include their family into their maternity photos. It’ll be wonderful for the baby to be able to look back at these images and see how excited the entire family was to welcome him or her into this world. Here are some tips for including family into your maternity photos:
- Coordinating outfits work great but please don’t wear matching outfits. It’s so nice when outfits complement each other but everyone’s personality and style still shows through the choice of clothing they wear.
- Avoid patterns, as they tend to be distracting for this type of session.
- As far as colors go, neutrals are always lovely. Or, if you prefer color, include pops of color in a scarf or cardigan, for example.
