From the looks of our blog traffic stats from last week, you loved checking out our Best of 2016 Wedding Day Details post last week! It comes as no surprise, since every bride loves pretty things on her wedding day, right? Well, today I thought I’d share a little insight into one of my very favorite details of the day: wedding stationery. Discovering all the paper products of a wedding day is always one of my favorite parts of the my experience with each wedding. From the Save the Date, invitation suite, to the ceremony program, to the seating cards and reception menu, wedding stationery has a unique way of pulling your wedding style and theme together like no other detail can. This is why I love that more and more brides are opting for custom wedding stationery these days! But how do you decide who to work with? It’s not an easy choice to make so today I thought I’d invite Lisa from Art Paper Scissors to give you a little insight on working with a custom invite designer for your wedding day. Enjoy this Vendor Spotlight!
Tell us a little about you and your business.
Art Paper Scissors was born in 2007 when the love of my life proposed to me and I made the fateful decision to design and make my own wedding invitations. Spending the previous 8 years as a full-time graphic designer it only made sense! What I didn’t realize is just how much I would enjoy it and how immensely satisfying it was from an artistic perspective. It was then I decided to pursue wedding invitation design as a career. Never in my wild dreams would I have imagined myself making a business around wedding invitations but now I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
What do you love most about what you do?
Nothing gives me greater joy then being a part, even in small way, of a couple’s special day. It’s truly a unique blessing to be a part of a couple’s most important decision. And as a creative person, Art Paper Scissors’ custom design approach always pushes me creatively. It’s enormously satisfying.
How does the process work?
I get a lot of feedback that the whole process is very fun and stress free, so that is always my goal for every couple. To initiate the process, I like to schedule a personal meeting with the bride and/or groom. If they are located in the area, I always encourage them to come to my office. This way they can see the quality of our work firsthand! During this initial meeting, I ask a series of questions that allow for me to gauge their style, taste, and desired direction of their invites. It’s always encouraged to bring pictures, have a Pinterest board ready, anything that would help me bring your vision to life. Then it’s onto the design process – my favorite part! I use all the notes from our initial meeting to design 3-custom invitations and create 3-physical mock-ups to present. that’s right. Our proofs are not digital, they are the real deal. This way you can see the colors in their true form, feel the texture of the paper, and experience how your guests will open the invitation to your wedding. Then we move onto editing process. This stage is very unique to each bridge and groom. It’s not complete until the bridge and groom are in love with the design. Sometimes a couple will say…oh number 2, that’s perfect, but more often that not it is a combination of all of the designs. Maybe the font from one, the border from another, or a ribbon used in the third. It really allows for the couple to have creative input in the design and to really help shape everything! I always say that it’s like getting to DIY your invites without having to do any of the work yourself. Last and certainly not least, we go to production. Once the invites are completed, they are delivered fully assembled ready to mail out to your guests!
What are some of the advantages of custom wedding stationery?
They are just way more personal. Every single detail of the invite is a reflection of you and you don’t have to sacrifice one single thing! For some brides it is great because they can add in some really unique graphics that they can’t find in a pre-made set, and for some it’s great because we can customize the small details. For instance, some like to include brunch information, or rehearsal dinner information, or even some fun FAQs. We can literally create and change any single thing you want…the doors are wide open for any kind of variation or creativity you can imagine!
We loved the suite you designed for Lisa and Mike! Can you tell us more about where you drew inspiration and what your favorite part of it was?
They were so much fun to work with! For Lisa and Mike’s invites, they were looking for something simple and a bit modern with a clean look. They also wanted a mix of clean and modern fonts paired with a modern calligraphy font, so for me the inspiration was definitely in finding the right balance of fonts. I personally LOVE typography and always love looking for new fonts to fit a couple’s vision so for me it was fun to go on the hunt for some new modern calligraphy fonts.
What should our brides know about your process and about working with you?
When we say custom, we mean totally custom. You are the drivers of the creative process and because of that, your invitation will be 100% unique. From pop-up invitations, to completely hand made pocket enclosures in any shape or size, the sky is really the limit. We are also super organized and particular about every detail, so rest assured that we will make sure every small detail is perfect and will always help to keep you on schedule and help in any way we can along the way. We want your invitations to be something exciting and fun for every couple, and that is always something we strive to achieve!
